Missoula Open Space Bond

Background

A coalition of local elected officials, environmental organizations and community members organized a campaign committee to preserve Missoula County’s scenic beauty, create and maintain local parks and protect local family farms through an Open Space Bond.

With only two months to go before Election Day, the committee contacted TBWB to help create campaign messaging and direct mail to ensure that the bond passed
in November.

What We Did

Missoula County’s diverse electorate includes a largely liberal population in the City of Missoula, as well as conservative voters in rural areas. TBWB’s challenge was to create a campaign message and strategy that would appeal all voters in the county.

We created a four-tiered campaign message that emphasized the benefits of open space for all Missoula County residents. Protecting clean water, creating recreational lands, preserving family farms and maintaining the Missoula way of life were universal messages that appealed to liberal and conservative voters county-wide. With four eye-catching and creative mail pieces that carried these messages to local voters, the Missoula Open Space Bond passed with overwhelming support.

Results

Missoula’s Open Space Bond passed with over 70% of the vote.

“Our best polling got us to 65% favorable for the Misssoula, Montana open space bond, and we won with 72%. The TBWB mail was virtually the only contact with voters in between, so it must have been the major factor in winning the ballot initiative by a record margin!”
